The research work titled "Aromatic & Medicinal Plants Protect Our Health and Preserve Our Cosmetics" has begun.

Mellifora's goal is to be able to create cosmetics without chemical preservatives or other harmful substances, rich in natural ingredients that boost our health and wellness without side-effects. We have been able to produce with care and zest pure, natural, herbal cosmetics without chemical preservatives and that is why they have a short expiry date. Now, we are investigating the antimicrobial action of substances that we extract from the aromatic plants of the greater Olympus area.

The research investigates: a) the effectiveness of ingredients in the fight against skin micro-organisms that cause skin acne problems and b) the effectiveness in fighting bacteria and fungi in the product itself in order to increase its durability.

The first results of the survey are already very encouraging. A first announcement of these results will be held at the 15th Pan-Hellenic Scientific Conference of the Hellenic Botanical Society, which will be held from 14 to 17 September 2017 in Crete. The research on the antimicrobial activity of our herbal cosmetic products was undertaken by Dr. Mamoucha S. and Dr. Prompana A., from the National Center for Research in Natural Sciences "Demokritos", as well as the Deputy Director of the Department of Microbiology of the NIMTS and Liapis B. Part of the experiments will be carried out in the Department of Pharmacy of the University Of Athens.

Dimokritos7The 15th Pan-Hellenic Scientific Conference of the Hellenic Botanical Society was held at the Conference Center of the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania, from 14th to 17th September, where the first part of scientific research conducted by Mellifora in collaboration with scientific institutions was presented.

The Conference was co-organized by the Hellenic Botanical Society and the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania, with the support of the Crete Region and the Municipality of Chania.

In November 2014, the Municipality started a training and educational program focused on the processing of raw materials in our region. Specifically, Mellifora - in collaboration with the High School of Kontariotissa - trains students in the production of olive oil soap, honey wine, honey beer and other products. Young people learn the process of production, packaging and distribution of their products. The meetings are held at the High School’s chemistry lab every Saturday or Sunday. The students named their brand “Άρωμα Ολύμπου” (Scent of Olympus). The chronicle of the meetings can be found at: You can find a photo and video collection of all workshops.

At this stage, we study the effect of propolis on microbial growth and whether it can protect our products from the growth of bacteria and fungi. We also control the production process and improve it to increase the durability of our products over time, without adding chemical preservatives.

Dimokritos7We participate with the dissemination of our research results at the 7th Pan-Hellenic Conference of Hellenic Society of Medical Mycology, 3-5 November 2017. The subject of the conference is "Fungal Infections: A Continuous Challenge"

Dimokritos2Following our research and after the presentations at the conferences on the antibacterial (15th Pan-Hellenic Botanical Society Conference) and antifungal (7th Pan-Hellenic Conference of Hellenic Society of Medical Mycology) action of the plant extracts we use in the production of cosmetics in Mellifora, we are pleased to announce that the research work we had submitted to the Journal of Hellenic Society for Microbiology has been accepted and will be published in the next issue.

The paper was written by Dr. Mamoucha Stavroula and Dr. Probona Anastasia and was held at the laboratory of the Institute of Biosciences of NCSR Democritos.
